Jannik Sinner wrote a new history for himself, partly opening up new dominance of the tennis industry when he defeated Daniil Medvedev and won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open (AO) 2024.
After his historic success, Sinner had a photo shoot as usual at the Botanical Garden in Melbourne (Australia), where the 22-year-old Italian tennis player shared many interesting things.
Sinner confided: “It’s a pleasure to be here on this wonderful day, to celebrate a memorable milestone with my team. After the match, I went to eat with them, we talked a lot about the title. It’s an important success for me, for my career, for my team, but it doesn’t change anything about who I am. I’m a simple guy, I can’t wait to be back back to tennis”.
Like many other tennis players, the Italian star is also a big fan of Roger Federer. He said: “I’m very happy to be part of the new generation of tennis, which is what this sport needs. My role model has always been Federer, not only because of his class, but because of the way he presents himself: the important thing is that the best people are still by your side, always welcoming you with a smile.”
Talking about Djokovic’s 10 titles at AO, Sinner said: “I don’t think much about it, his (Nole’s) achievements are amazing. I still have a lot of time to devote. Currently, I I feel happy holding this trophy in my hands.”
Identifying the moment when Djokovic “lost his glory”
No one can maintain top form forever, and Novak Djokovic also partly understood that after losing to Sinner in the AO 2024 semi-finals. Novak’s “downward” signs were noticed right in the AO semi-final this year. Today, however, it will be more clearly shown in the 2023 Davis Cup semi-finals.
Set 3, while leading 5-4, Djokovic had 3 opportunities to win match-point when leading 40-0 in the game where his opponent held serve. As usual, Nole would not give the opponent a chance to “turn over”, but that did not happen. Nole was again dominated by Sinner, winning 5 consecutive points to equalize 5-5. Worse, Nole had his serve broken right after, before suffering a 5-7 defeat, thereby accepting a loss to Sinner with a score of 1-2 (2-6, 6-2, 5-7).
After not being able to help Serbia win tickets to the Davis Cup finals, Djokovic choked up as if about to burst into tears. It seemed like a sign of Nole’s regret but also mixed with helplessness.
It is too early to declare that Djokovic’s era of dominance in men’s tennis is over and it would also be too early to suggest that Sinner has found a way to dethrone the greatest tennis player of all time.
Djokovic has encountered a real counterweight. But it’s not just Sinner. If he wants to dominate the ball, the Serbian tennis player must compete with other stars such as Carlos Alcaral, Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and even Rafael Nadal.
