Beautiful, talented, famous, Selena Gomez thought life was all rosy but it wasn’t. The American female artist has continuously faced a series of problems related to her health over the years. In an interview with Elle magazine in 2021, Selena Gomez once exclaimed: “Every time I go through something, I say to myself, ‘What else? What other problems do I have to solve?”.
The 30-year-old star confided that, recently, she considers her health a top priority and it is a long journey that she must pursue for the rest of her life. Selena Gomez confided to Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “Everyone who knows me will understand that I always start everything with my health and happiness. There will never be a day when I calmly wear a pretty dress. beautiful and declared that I had won.”
Selena Gomez is said to have had blood pressure problems since she was a teenager
The multi-talented female artist first encountered health problems in 2011, when she was only 9 years old. At that time, Selena had to be hospitalized after having a severe headache and nausea while appearing on the Tonight Show.
At that time, TMZ reported that Selena was taken to the hospital and checked for blood pressure problems. According to Healthline, high blood pressure could be an early sign of lupus-related nephritis, the disease with which Gomez was later diagnosed. In an interview in 2019, Selena Gomez affirmed: “I have lupus and deal with kidney problems and high blood pressure.”
At age 18, Gomez was hospitalized again. A few days after getting sick, the actress shared on social networks: “I feel much better now. I look forward to performing again.” According to the Los Angeles Times, when a reporter asked Selena Gomez about her health, she replied, “I’m fine. I’m just very malnourished, so I’m iron deficient and exhausted.” In retrospect, this incident may have been Selena Gomez’s first warning sign of her more serious health problems.
In 2015, Selena Gomez spoke publicly about her lupus for the first time, despite the fact that she had been dealing with symptoms of the disease for years. The brown-haired singer had to quit her job in 2013 and 2014, but she kept the reason for her hiatus a secret for a long time.
The fact that Selena Gomez “disappeared” for a period of time caused tabloids to speculate that she was struggling with drug or alcohol use. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Selena Gomez affirmed: “I’ve never had a problem with drinking. I was diagnosed with lupus. Those are the things that make me miss work. I can had a stroke”.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease of which systemic lupus erythematosus is the most common form of lupus. Lupus is different for each person and can affect different areas of the body. Although the symptoms of lupus can be controlled to some extent, there is no cure. As Gomez shared with MC Ellen DeGeneres, “I will have this disease forever. It’s one of those situations.”
While on vacation in 2013, Selena Gomez underwent chemotherapy in an attempt to treat her lupus. When the media falsely speculated about Selena Gomez’s condition, she felt quite angry.
In an October 2015 interview with Billboard magazine, Selena Gomez said: “I really want to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m having chemotherapy.” I was so angry, I even felt the need to say it. When I went public about my illness, I thought I wanted to help, share with others.”
In 2016, Selena Gomez had to cancel more than 30 tour dates in the middle of her big tour and checked into a mental health facility in Tennessee, USA. Later, in an interview with People magazine, the singer shared that she had been struggling with her mental health and that it could be a side effect of lupus.
A year later, Gomez told Vogue magazine: “Touring makes me feel lonely. I’m depressed, anxious. I start having panic attacks right before going on stage or right after leaving the stage”. Selena Gomez stayed at a psychiatric treatment center for 90 days, where she participated in various forms of therapy. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do but also the best thing I’ve done,” Selena Gomez told Vogue.
In a 2017 interview with the Today show, Gomez said she initially had no intention of scaling back her career after being diagnosed. “Honestly, I ignored it, because it wasn’t something I really wanted to accept,” Selena confided.
In 2018, Gomez felt she needed help again, so she sought treatment at another psychiatric care facility. At the time, a source told news site ET, “Selena Gomez did this to ensure that she continues on a good path.”
That same year, Gomez told Harper’s Bazaar that she believed her mental health journey was far from over. “I’ve had a lot of problems with depression and anxiety and I’ve been very vocal about it but it’s not something that I feel like I’ll ever overcome. I think that’s a battle that I’ll have to face for the rest of my life.”
In 2017, Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant. The female singer said: “My kidneys have stopped working.” According to news sites, lupus can lead to kidney inflammation, a condition called lupus nephritis, which can lead to kidney failure.
Luckily for Selena Gomez, her close friend, actress Francia Raisa, was a match and willing to donate a kidney to the former Disney star. Selena says, “The kidney transplant saved my life. My arthritis is gone. My lupus is only about 3 to 5 percent more likely to come back. My blood pressure is better. Energy, life My life is better.” However, in 2018, Gomez was hospitalized because her white blood cell count was too low, which could be a side effect of a kidney transplant.
In 2020, Selena Gomez revealed her bipolar disorder diagnosis. The actress, born in 1992, shared that she considers this diagnosis a blessing in many ways because her bouts of depression and mental health struggles are no longer a mystery.
Selena Gomez also encouraged others not to be afraid to seek help, even if the illness seems scary. “When I learned more information, it really helped me. I wasn’t afraid once I knew that. As a child, I was afraid of thunderstorms but when I understood them well, fear Mine disappeared,” Selena said.
Although the depression that accompanies this disorder can be difficult to control, Selena Gomez feels she is better able to handle her condition thanks to a solid treatment plan. “I do the necessary things. I see a therapist. I do my homework like a nerd. I write music. I try to take what’s going on and turn it into something beautiful in a good way I’m probably at the happiest moment possible right now,” Selena said.
Overcoming all difficulties and illnesses, Selena still strongly pursued her career and found her purpose in life even amid the challenges. “I will help people. That’s really what makes me continue to live and work,” the beautiful actress shared with the press.
