Scarlett Johansson is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. Director Noah Baumbach credits her honesty about her personal life as a catalyst for their acclaimed film “Marriage Story.” Johansson’s willingness to be vulnerable translates into powerful acting.
Johansson’s career spans an impressive 25 years. From child star roles in “North” and “The Horse Whisperer” to her breakout performance in “Lost in Translation” at 18, she’s consistently delivered exceptional work. Many fans still believe she was wrongly denied the Best Actress Oscar for “Lost in Translation.”
Johansson isn’t just a box office draw; she’s an artist. In the last decade alone, she’s starred in 21 films that grossed a staggering $13 billion. Critically acclaimed films like “Under the Skin,” “Her,” and “Lucy” showcase her depth and range. Even her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has garnered praise.
The future looks bright for Johansson. Her own Black Widow movie is slated to launch Phase 4 of the Marvel Universe in May 2020. Her powerful performance in “Marriage Story” has awards season buzzing, with a Golden Globe nomination for Outstanding Drama Actress.
Whether or not she’s the official “Star of the Decade” is debatable, but with her talent, dedication, and willingness to take risks, Scarlett Johansson is undeniably a Hollywood powerhouse.
The woman of two broken marriages
“I got married for the first time when I was 23 years old. At that time, I didn’t understand marriage very well, maybe I romanticized it too much,” Johansson recalled on her marriage with Ryan Reynolds (star of Deadpool) on Vanity Fair. The marriage lasted 3 short years. They married in 2010, separated in December 2010, and divorced in July 2011.
Johansson moved on with Romain Dauriac, owner of an advertising agency in France, in 2014. Before that, the same year, the actress gave birth to her first daughter, Rose. In mid-2016, they separated. In September 2017, they divorced.
Johansson’s confession to director Noah Baumbach (“I’m going through a divorce”) was about her divorce from her second husband, Romain Dauriac.
Life milestones described through numbers sound cold and dry. But those who have gone through divorce understand. Why is the time between divorce and separation so long? During the second divorce, Johansson took more than a year for all procedures to be completed. What happened during that time?
That is probably what is depicted in Marriage Story, a film about the emotional journey of a couple during the divorce process. Besides her excellent co-star Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson also gave a very real performance when she put many emotions and personal experiences into her role.
“I understand the sweetness and lies of divorce. All the character’s emotional struggles,” she told Vanity Fair. To play Marriage Story, she relived her parents’ marriage to convey the most profound things on screen.
However, cinema is not simply bringing real life to the screen. Because Johansson has actually never experienced a divorce like in the movie. “That is the director’s experience, not mine” – she said – “But fortunately, the experience of being a mother has helped me a lot in understanding the character.”
Scarlett Johansson fully understands the harshness of the divorce legal system (an important theme of Marriage Story), the huge economic losses of divorce, and the terrible problems that society has yet to adjust to. Okay. That makes every happy family the same, but when it comes to unhappiness, each family is different.
After two failed marriages, the Hollywood beauty still continues to believe in the miracle of marriage. “Coming together, building a family, I really like that idea. It’s great. I hope my daughter’s father will also have another happy marriage,” Johansson shared.
Currently, Scarlett Johansson is engaged to Saturday Night Live writer Colin Jost after 2 years of dating. She revealed that he proposed to her in a very “romantic and special” way.
