In a recent interview for PEOPLE’s 50th Anniversary issue, the 23-time Grand Slam winner reflected on her legacy, both on the court and in the world of fashion. She discussed the impact of her barrier-breaking victories and the inspiration she hopes to be for her daughters, Olympia and Alexis.

Williams also revisited some of her most memorable fashion moments, including the infamous quote from a 2003 PEOPLE interview: “I’ve been on worst dressed lists and I don’t care.” Two decades later, her perspective remains unchanged.

“Listen, I think being on worst dressed lists is important,” she says. She embraces fashion as a form of self-expression, a way to showcase her personality and inner self to the world. Whether lauded or criticized, Williams views all fashion moments as a form of personal expression.

“Hey, at least I made a list,” she laughs.

Looking back at the fashion trends of the 2000s, a period known for its bold and often outrageous styles, Williams admits she might not be able to rock those same looks today. “My body might not fit the same things,” she laughs.
