In a recent interaction with fans on social media, Roger Federer opened up about a variety of topics, from his relationship with Rafael Nadal to his feelings on retirement and its impact on his career and his family life.
Federer decided to retire in September 2022 in the event that is considered his “brainchild” – Laver Cup. He hung up his racket after an illustrious career spanning nearly two and a half decades, with 103 titles, including 20 Grand Slams to his name.
“Express Train”‘s decision to retire from competition means his life has changed dramatically, from traveling around the world to compete to settling with his family in his native Switzerland.
During his virtual interaction with fans, Federer reminisced about his playing days and revealed that he misses the fans, the thrill, the big stadiums and his colleagues.
“In a crazy way, I remember everything about it. For many years of my life, I didn’t even remember what day of the week it was (except Monday was the start of the tournament and Sunday was the end), Federer said.
“What I miss the most: having an impromptu dinner on tour with friends after a match or practice. And of course, the big stadiums, the fans and the thrill of it all.”
However, the 41-year-old legend admitted that he feels much more comfortable after retiring.
“There were so many little things that I didn’t know were creating so much stress that just went away, which was really nice. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” said the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
In addition to leisurely activities with his family, Federer joked that he has now taken on the role of coach, training his children.
“I’m a #dadcoach, it’s not easy but I love every minute with my kids,” he said. Federer and his wife Mirka have four children: Myla, Charlene, Lenny and Leo.
But the former world No. 1 also revealed that he slept less when he was under pressure on tours.
“I actually sleep less. Before, I ‘had’ to go to sleep. There’s less pressure now. So I sleep less. It’s strange, isn’t it?”
Although he has retired from competition, Federer said that he is ready to participate in friendly matches and is looking forward to competing in South America again.
“I want to play performance events in the future and if so, going to South America again would be amazing,” he said.
